We got festive!


Yes all the jamjar ladies have embraced Christmas this year, and we even created our very own jamjar team photo (complete with fetching headwear!)

Earlier in the month we shared some festive cheer with our lovely clients by delivering our Christmas survival kits in a jamjar – of course!

Supported Cwm Taf’s latest campaign


Our head jammer Lyndsey has been extremely busy supporting the next phase of Cwm Taf University Health Board’s recruitment campaign this month.

Over the past week filming has taken place for Cwm Taf’s award-winning campaign.

Cwm Taf UHB will be launching the campaign in the new year in a bid to attract more innovative Allied Health Professionals from across the UK and internationally.

Inspiring Sony UK TEC engineer claims three top tech awards

A Sony UK Technology Centre engineer who is helping to “inspire a new generation of female tech talent” has claimed three prestigious national awards.

Jessica Leigh Jones received top honours in the Manufacturer Top 100, TechWomen50, and Women of the Future 2017 Awards.

The engineer, who is based at the leading manufacturing facility in Pencoed, claimed the Technology and Digital award at the Women of the Future Awards, which recognises women making an impact across a diverse range of professional sectors.

She was also recognised among the most exemplary 20 in the prestigious Manufacturer Top 100 list for 2017. This celebrates the invaluable contribution made by innovative and passionate individuals in the manufacturing sector.

Finally, she was named among the winners of the TechWomen50 Awards, following a public vote. These awards highlight the best female tech talent in the country, along with the impact of champions, companies and networks that are leading the way for future generations.

Ms Leigh Jones was recognised thanks to her passion and dedication to advancing manufacturing and technology standards across the UK.

She has demonstrated this through her role at Sony UK TEC, which produces thousands of HD and 4K broadcast and professional camera systems each year, where she is a part of the facility’s landmark Advanced Manufacturing Research Operations Centre (AMROC) team. This facility helps to develop ground-breaking manufacturing processes of the future, focussing on the fourth generation of manufacturing, industry 4.0.

On her recognition, she said: “It’s humbling to have been recognised among some of the country’s most inspirational female tech talents, who are truly making a difference and driving progress in the UK’s tech industry.

“These awards are vital in recognising the unparalleled contribution women are making across technology-based professions, and supporting their limitless potential for driving innovation and change in the future.

“I am delighted to have won these awards, and cannot thank my peers throughout the industry, and those who voted for me, enough.

“These awards particularly resonate with me personally, as they link in with our ethos at Sony UK TEC. As a facility we champion continuous innovation and are always striving for excellence, something which I feel is reflected wholeheartedly through these awards.”

Bridgend hospital staff ‘delighted’ with Sony UK TEC donation

Bridgend hospital staff are “beyond delighted” with a generous Sony UK Technology Centre donation supporting a unit caring for seriously ill children this Christmas.

Staff at the Princess of Wales Hospital have praised the Pencoed-based manufacturing facility for enabling the refurbishment of its specialist nurse-led area.

Funding from Sony UK TEC, which has donated over £60,000 to the hospital over the past five years, will help to enhance the overall hospital experience for children who are facing serious health issues, and require urgent nurse-led care at the Children’s Ward.

Thanks to their contribution the area has received a much-needed makeover, along with new furnishings, which will create a welcoming environment for young people receiving a higher-level of nursing care over the festive season.

The manufacturing facility’s contribution, along with the unit’s refurbishment, was marked with a special plaque, which was unveiled by Sony UK TEC managing director Steve Dalton OBE.

They were joined by special guests 2011 Rugby World Cup and British and Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton, along with BBC Wales Sports Personality of 2017 and Player of the Series Jonathan Davies.

Steve Dalton OBE said it was a privilege to offer ongoing support to this “hugely beneficial” facility. He said: “As a business, which prides itself on supporting the local community, it is our pleasure to be able to contribute to the improvement of this fantastic unit.

“This has the potential to make such an immense difference to children across south Wales, and their families, so we are delighted to have supported the project.

“Many valued staff members at Sony UK TEC have had family members who have relied on the specialist care at the Princess of Wales Hospital, therefore all of our team are very passionate and committed to backing their great work.

“We look forward to supporting its progress in the future.”

Sony UK TEC’s determined team have undertaken a variety of charity events in a bid to support the specialist area’s fundraising efforts.

These have included a charity football match at Cardiff City Football Club, a charity golf day at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Course; a 300 mile bike ride from north to south Wales; cake sales, and individual fundraising campaigns undertaken by its team players.

Sony UK TEC has supported the hospital as its adopted charity for the past five years, raising over £60,000 towards specialist equipment and projects, including the refurbishment of the playroom at the Children’s Ward in 2015, the purchase of three Vapotherm machines that help babies and children with breathing difficulties. Additional donations have included hand-held pulse oximeters, drip stands and other pieces of equipment.

Eirlys Thomas, ABMU Head of Nursing for Children’s Services said: “Fundraising requires a great deal of commitment and hard work and we are all extremely grateful to the staff of Sony for their kind donations and their support in the refurbishment of the four-bed bay within the ward area.

“This has improved the environment greatly, providing cupboards for storage and decorating the area in a way that is suitable for all age groups. On behalf of all the children and staff at the Princess of Wales Hospital I would like to say a big thank you and wish them all a very happy Christmas and new year.”

We won gold!

jamjar claimed four gold awards at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Cymru Wales PRide Awards on November 24 at Cardiff City Hall – needless to say, we were thrilled!

For our work with educational charity Techniquest, we picked up gongs in the Not-For-Profit campaign and STEM campaign categories.

We also claimed the top awards in the Best Use of Digital and Healthcare campaign categories for our work to boost recruitment of nurses at Cwm Taf University Health Board.

It was great to get this recognition from our industry body and it tops off another great year for the team.


We started mixing up the jam


Our in-house designer Anna has started work this month on refreshing our brand. After five years of Raspberry Jim taking pride of place, we’ve decided to give him a little makeover in preparation for a fresh new look in 2018!

The last five years have been a whirlwind and our offering and the industry has evolved considerably during this time. We’re really looking forward to unveiling our new look in 2018 – so watch this space.


We sampled the new Moksh Christmas menu


Moksh has been previewing its exciting new festive taster menu this month.

And two of our lucky team, Megan Richards and Shelley-Marie Phillips got the chance to sample some of the innovative dishes including lamb meat balls and cinnamon candy floss, jaffa chicken tikka in a sealed smoke jar, and Indian street food the alchemist way this December.

Award-winning chef Stephen Gomes has once again out done himself. If you haven’t been to his fine dining Indian restaurant in Cardiff Bay, make sure you pay it a visit this Christmas.


Oil 4 Wales welcomed Max Boyce

Leading Welsh oil distributor Oil 4 Wales has welcomed comedian and entertainer Max Boyce to its family this month.

The national brand has appointed the Welsh icon as one of its high-profile ambassadors, joining sporting heroes including Dan Biggar, Dan Lydiate, and Ken Owens, along with BBC Welsh Hill farmer Gareth Wyn Jones.

On November 1, we hosted a free play festival – PlayFest – on behalf of Merthyr County Borough Council. The event marked the start of a new campaign – All to Play For – which encourages children and young people in the borough to swap TVs, tablets and phones for playing.

The Cardiff-based science discovery centre is preparing to present its twist on a classic, with its Techniquest Christmas Carol.

We enjoyed a lovely, and slightly bubbly, lunch at The Classroom at Cardiff & Vale College, followed by a pottery throwdown workshop at The Sustainable Studios.

Some of us excelled and displayed some enviable pottery skills, others of us, maybe even someone writing this blog, will be sticking to the day job!

After an enjoyable afternoon we enjoyed a few well-earned drinks in Cardiff to finish off a great day!

Creative communications agency jamjar has come out on top at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations’ annual PR awards after scooping four gold awards.

The Cowbridge-based agency, which specialises in insight-led PR, digital and social communication solutions, was recognised by its industry body for its work on Cwm Taf University Health Board and educational charity Techniquest.

For its work on Techniquest, jamjar picked up awards for Not-for-Profit Campaign and STEM Campaign after helping the charity raise its profile in its 30th year. Judges commented that this was  “a campaign and agency worth its weight in gold”.

While for Cwm Taf University Health Board a digital campaign to help the health board attract nurses secured jamjar awards in the Digital and Healthcare categories.

CIPR judges commented that: “This campaign used insights revealed from its pre-campaign research to develop tactics that would resonate with its target audience. A dynamic approach to a sector wide challenge has delivered direct results and this is evident by the health board securing budget for recruitment in other new sectors. Very cost effective use of digital PR.”

These are the latest awards in an impressive list of successes for the young agency having also won  a Wales Marketing Award from the Chartered Institute of Marking, and the Excellence in Communications & Marketing category at the Welsh Business Awards.

Established in 2012 by Lyndsey Jenkins, the agency works with businesses across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors including Wales Millennium Centre, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, Oil 4 Wales and the five star St David’s Hotel.

On receiving the awards, Lyndsey Jenkins, managing director of jamjar, said: “These award wins top off another successful year for our agency. We work extremely hard to deliver creative, engaging and results-driven communications campaigns, while still being cost effective so it’s great to get this external acknowledgement.”

CJCH Solicitors’ collaboration boosts global fight against cyber crime

A Cardiff law firm is strengthening the fight against international piracy and cyber crime thanks to a landmark legal collaboration.

Experts from CJCH Solicitors have teamed up with Chinese law firm Hunyuan Partners to share their renowned anti-piracy knowledge, which could help tackle the wide-spread issue internationally.

As part of the initiative, chief executive officer and founding partner Stephen Clarke, and head of licence compliance research Tim Early, recently travelled to the firm’s Shanghai, Tokyo, and Seoul offices in a bid to further understanding surrounding anti-piracy practice.

During the trip topics discussed included software piracy, how to interpret infringement telemetry, and best practice from CJCH’s extensive experience of working in the field of Software Licence Compliance.

Mr Clarke, who specialises in advising in intellectual property and criminal law, said this was the start of an exciting new phase for both firms.

He said: “We would like to thank senior partner at the firm Zhenhao for welcoming us and working so effectively to further this collaboration.

“Not only will this exciting initiative help to strengthen international anti-piracy measures, it will also enable both firms to explore new markets and extend their legal and business reach into Europe, Africa, Asia and America.

“This new collaboration has opened up a wealth of exciting prospects for both firms and we welcome the opportunity to support each other in the future.”

Mr Early, from the Cardiff-based firm, said the initiative had been “extremely beneficial” for both firms, forging strong links going forwards.

He said: “This was a resounding success in international collaboration and cross-border relationship building. Based on the positive feedback received from the attendees, the training was well received and they were able to put the disseminated information to good use immediately.

“We look forward to progressing this new partnership and utilising it to enhance anti-piracy measures internationally.”

CJCH Solicitors was called on thanks to its international reputation in the fields of cyber crime and anti-piracy, having recouped millions of euros for clients in recent years.

Earlier this year their expertise attracted backing from the Welsh Government, as the specialist Cardiff firm aims to create and run a central hub for anti-piracy and cyber security in Wales.

Call centre staff fraud ‘must be tackled’ as UK-wide losses reach £40m

Call centre managers are being urged to be vigilant against employee fraud “before it is too late” as UK-wide business losses soar to £40 million.

Consultant Philip Williams from Blackfords LLP, which specialises in defending some of the country’s most complex fraud cases, said the issue is among one of the most pressing facing managers in over 6,200 call centres across the UK.

This warning comes as figures from ActionFraud show that businesses in industries across the UK reported £40 million in losses from this type of crime between 2016 and 2017. During this period over 800 reports were submitted to the police, figures show.

Employee fraud is defined as committing a fraud against the business an employee is working for, these could include payment fraud, procurement fraud, and exploiting assets and confidential information.

However, employers could tackle these internal threats by implementing effective audits, Mr Williams said. Figures from the national cyber crime and fraud prevention centre reveal that 47% of frauds were uncovered as a result of successfully applied internal controls.

He said: “The ability of a call centre to operate effectively is almost entirely reliant on the trust of the customers it is working for. Thousands of contact centre workers handle sensitive financial and personal data daily and it is paramount that this is sufficiently protected.

“As such, any breach of rules which expose these confidential details is a serious issue.

“Employee fraud could not just damage the business’s reputation, but impact it financially, from a regulatory perspective, and also have significant internal implications.

“On a more national level, it doesn’t just jeopardise the future of the individual business, but potentially the reputation of the entire industry.

“It is for this reason that call centre managers must implement thorough audit and regulations to ensure proper procedures are followed in relation to sensitive information, but also to identify and effectively tackle any instances of staff fraud immediately.”

Mr Williams, who has extensive experience in acting on some of the UK’s most high-profile fraud cases, has offered his top four tips on what call centre managers can do to safeguard themselves against employee fraud.


Background checks are key

When hiring an employee to handle confidential data and interact with the public in potentially challenging circumstances, trustworthiness and competency is essential.

As such, one of the most important tools for a prospective employer to utilise is the background check.

This enables a manager to assess the individual’s suitability for the role to ensure the most appropriate people are employed.

An effective background check can review an individual’s employment, criminal, and in some instances financial information to ascertain their suitability.

For employees who will be exposed to particularly sensitive or confidential information, it is advised that this be coupled with a reference, both personal and professional, along with a mock working scenario, which can demonstrate the worker’s capabilities and character.

A background check is a successful line of defence which allows you to safeguard your business against fraud and crime. Failing to undertake this could leave you and your staff and business vulnerable to reputational, regulatory, and financial damage.

Surprise audits

While routine audits of the business and its internal procedures can be effective at monitoring the call centre’s progress, a surprise audit has been shown to be the most successful method of identifying fraudulent staff behaviour.

According to research, the duration of employee fraud can be reduced by 50% by utilising spontaneous audits, while the median financial loss from this activity was also cut by 43.4%.

Spending time to audit procedures surrounding customer security could help to identify any potentially worrying internal data or trends.

Examining whether security checks were carried out in line with the company’s policies, or whether financial information was transmitted securely could serve to protect the call centre against fraudulent practices.

Not only will this help to eradicate any damaging behaviour, it will help to shape future policies and strengthen the business going forwards.


Thorough training

Staff could be left vulnerable to fraudulent third-party manipulation, or inadvertently compromise information, due to a lack of training.

Reinforcing and educating staff about what constitutes fraud at work, and implementing stringent anti-fraud policies, will help to eradicate potentially criminal activity at work. Fraud isn’t simply stealing money from an employer or customer, acts can include tampering with cheques or information, false representation for example in an application, wrongfully failing to disclose information – such as a criminal record or conviction, or disclosing confidential information.

Educating employees about the basics of identifying fraudulent behaviour could help to dramatically reduce fraud in the workplace. Signs of fraud could include living beyond their means, a disregard for internal procedures, medical issues, or gambling or financial concerns, reluctance to take holiday, or an unprofessionally close association with customers.


Site security is vital

Ensuring customers feel secure in sharing their confidential information safely to your website is key.

Most call centres will have a website where customers can visit and log into their personal account, which could contain private medical records, financial or personal information.

In order to contact a call centre support member, some customers may have to input passwords, email addresses, phone numbers, or usernames.

As such, customers must be reassured that the information they are inputting is being securely protected.

Call centres should ensure their site is protected by an SSL certificate, which not only ensures information is transmitted safely, but demonstrates confidence in the site’s authenticity.

An SSL certificate ensures that the sensitive information is transmitted across the internet in an encrypted format to ensure that only the intended recipient can read it securely.

This not only protects it against potential identity thieves and hackers, but also safeguards against employees who may have been manipulated into disclosing customers information to a third-party.

Techniquest brings the tricks and treats for Half Term

With Half Term on the way, Techniquest has revealed its Halloween-themed line-up of entertainment for family friendly fun.

The science discovery centre, based in Cardiff Bay, will be indulging in all things spooktacular with two special Halloween themed shows. The first show, Graham the Ghost, will introduce children to Techniquest’s very own Casper. With an interactive plot, children will have to help Graham, a friendly ghost, pass a test to join the Ghost Union after he loses his glow.

The centre will also be hosting a Spooky Science show all week, where visitors can find out if a pumpkin can carve itself into creepy faces, or if coins can scream.  There’ll also be a chance to find out whether science can help make ghosts or mix potions.

For something a little less scary, the Star Tours show will also be available all week. Star Tours takes the family on a journey into the night sky, following constellations and learning all about how stars live and die.

As well as its shows, the centre’s main exhibition floor will be open all week for visitors hoping to keep the family occupied. For those looking forward to getting in the spooky spirit, they are encouraged to come along in their favourite costume.

 For adults, Techniquest’s Halloween festivities will begin on Thursday October 26, when After Hours makes its deadly return. Dressed in lab coats and faced with a grisly crime scene, visitors will be asked to solve the case using CSI techniques. Enjoying a full bar and food on offer from The Grazing Shed, the event is strictly for over 18s.

Lesley Kirkpatrick, CEO at Techniquest, said: “We can’t wait to kick off our Halloween celebrations next week, and there’s so much on offer for the whole family. Even though it’s Half Term, there’s still an opportunity for children to learn in a fun and colourful environment, and to engage with STEM learning with friends and family.”

Greenaway Scott acts on over £100m worth of deals

A leading Cardiff business advisory firm has acted on over £100 million worth of lucrative deals over the past year, it has been revealed.

Award-winning Greenaway Scott has achieved the impressive results after working on a number of high-profile disposals, management buy outs, and acquisitions, with the combined deals achieving an aggregate value in excess of £100 million.

The firm, which offers commercially considered legal advice across a range of sector specialisms, advised over 13 fast-growing companies including Imspex Diagnostics, TrakCel, Flexicare Medical, and CoolTherm during this period.

Its most recent significant deal saw the firm, led by managing director Nigel Greenaway, take a major step into the digital currency market, advising world leading BitCoin trader Vaultoro.

With help from Greenaway Scott’s corporate team, the Bitcoin leader was able to successfully secure a seven figure investment from German-based company Finlab AG. The major funding boost will enable Vaultoro to expand its offering to incorporate additional currencies into its real-time trading platform.

On the landmark achievement for the Cardiff-based team Mr Greenaway said: Greenaway Scott is proving to be a leading business advisory force not just across Wales, but across the international business market with these figures proving to be a testament to the hard work of our specialist teams.

Our focus this year has been to expand our offering and explore diverse international markets which provide enhanced growth opportunities for us. In respect of the Vaultoro deal, we feel this has undoubtedly been achieved, and we are delighted to have assisted them in securing this seven figure sum.

Thanks to our success this year, we are now planning ahead for further growth in 2018, with the aim of researching further opportunities in fast-growing markets such as Bitcoin. Employers urged to be more transparent around workplace mental health

Employers across Wales are being urged to adopt more transparent attitudes to mental health as it’s revealed one in six workers struggle with the issue.

Leading mental health expert at CJCH Solicitors Keith James is calling on businesses to become more proactive and inclusive in supporting staff dealing with issues including depression, stress, and anxiety in the workplace.

Mr James, whose specialist firm has the largest mental health law department in South Wales, is speaking out ahead of World Mental Health Day on Tuesday. The global initiative, which aims to create a worldwide discussion surrounding mental illness, is this year highlighting the reality of mental health in the workplace.

This comes as Welsh Government figures have recently revealed that 90% of employees who take time off work due to stress, instead gave another reason for their absence, such as a stomach upset or headache. While the statistics also reveal that one in six workers is struggling with these issues.

No-one dealing with the daily struggle of depression, anxiety, or stress should be left to suffer silently for fear of discrimination. Equally, workers should not be afraid to speak to managers about mental health-related absences.

Introducing change must start from the top. Managers must adopt more transparent attitudes towards mental health as a priority, in order to encourage a culture of inclusivity and openness throughout the Welsh business economy.

I am delighted to see that workplace mental health will form the basis of this year’s World Mental Health Day, as I feel this is an issue that will only worsen if not tackled sensitively and co- operatively.

In a bid to support the mental wellbeing of its own valued team, CJCH provides a 24/7 dedicated employee help line, which includes mental health and wellness support, at the firm.

Ahead of World Mental Health Day, Mr James has offered his top tips to businesses to encourage greater discussion and understanding around mental health in the workplace.

Recognising stress

Stress is often dismissed an inevitability in a busy working environment. However, when stress exceeds the norm, it can have a serious impact on a workforce, affecting its productivity, the wellbeing of staff members, and damage working relationships.
