The Brief

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council’s family team approached us to develop a bilingual campaign with the aim of encouraging parents and carers to make time for play with their children, as well as to give them some tips and ideas on how to facilitate play.

Campaign concept

In the first instance, we developed:

  • A concept/theme to hang the campaign on: All to play for. Popeth i Chwarae Amdano.
  • A core message: Play is an essential part of a child’s life. Make time to play. It’s all to play for.
  • A call to action: Visit merthyrfis.org to find out more.

This campaign concept was developed so that it has longevity and can be used year on year.

As the Merthyr Tydfil Family Information Service website was the main shop window for showcasing the benefits of playing, we created several website pages for the campaign.

  • All to play for This page displayed the main campaign video.
  • 10 reasons why play is important – This page explained why as adults it is important that we make sure our children have space, time and the company of others to play.
  • What we can do as adults – This page provided some tips for adults on how they can help facilitate play.
  • 30 days of play – This page gave parents 30 ideas – a play idea a day for a month – to get them started.

We created this film to highlight the benefits of play and heard from young people about what they like to do.

Launch Event – Playfest

To launch the campaign, we organised a free play festival at the Willows Centre in Troedyrhiw during half term. This gave the local community the opportunity to try out various play ideas and gave us the opportunity to hand out campaign collateral.

Social media campaign

We developed a social media campaign for the month of November. Each day during the month, we shared a graphic giving a play idea of the day and encouraged the local community to share photos of their children playing to be in with the chance of winning a £100 Argos gift card.

Several posters and social media graphics were created in support of this campaign which were used on the website and on social media:

  • a poster to advertise the Playfest
  • a poster highlighting the 30 play ideas
  • a social media graphic for each day of #30daysofplay

Digital advertising

Once we had developed a suite of collateral, we distributed this content where we knew our target audience would be active online. Our campaign was advertised through Facebook and Google Display Network advertising.
